Each year five to six thousand young drivers are killed in traffic crashes across the country.  More than 300,000 young drivers are injured annually.  Tragically, young inexperienced drivers are involved in fatal crashes at over twice the rate of the rest of the population.  No other kind of hazard or behavior comes close to claiming as many teen lives.  Spring Break is only a few weeks away.  Summer is only a few months after that.  Teen drivers will be in on the road in large numbers more frequently during these times.  Unfortunately, teen traffic deaths and injuries may be the result.  To reduce the potential of a traffic-related tragedy affecting your family, Oviedo Police are partnering with Allstate Insurance Company to sponsor a FREE "Protect Teen Drivers" program for teens and their parents on Tuesday, May 18th, 2010 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Oviedo Police C.O.P.S. & Volunteer Center at Oviedo Marketplace (inside by Dillard's).  Parents are encouraged to attend this training with their teens.

Teens, you will learn how to be safer drivers and to earn your family's trust.  Parents, you will learn how to partner with your teens to help them drive as safely as they can whenever they are on the road. The "Protect Teen Drivers" program focuses on the root causes of teen accidents and how parents can take action to protect teen drivers.  The program includes discussion points for parents as well as a teen driving contract that spells out expectations and consequences for violating the contract.  The program provides a guide for all parents who recognize the necessity to teach teens to drive responsibly.

Additional information related to the program can be found online at www.protectteendrivers.com

The Oviedo Marketplace is located accross the street from the townhomes at the Isles of Oviedo.
