Safety During The Holiday Season

Before crawling up on the roof to string the Christmas lights, you need to know that every year, hospital emergency rooms treat about 12,500 people for injuries, such as falls, cuts and shocks, related to holiday lights, decorations and Christmas trees, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

In addition, warns CPSC, candles start about 11,600 each year, resulting in 150 deaths, 1,200 injuries and $173 million in property loss. Christmas trees are involved in about 300 fires annually, resulting in 10 deaths, 30 injuries and an average of more than $10 million in property loss and damage.

BROWARD COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCES EXPANDED HOURS FOR H1N1 HIGH RISK VACCINATION CLINIC

(FORT LAUDERDALE) – Officials at the Broward County Health Department announced today expanded hours for the H1N1 High Risk Vaccination Clinic located at the Fort Lauderdale National Guard Armory. The H1N1 High Risk Vaccination Clinic will operate every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:00AM to 4:00PM and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:00AM to 8:00PM. Expanded hours will start Thursday, November 19, 2009. The National Guard Armory is located at 400 SW 24th Street in Fort Lauderdale 33315 (East State Road 84 and SW 4th Avenue). The H1N1 vaccination is free and available on a walk-in basis. NOTE: All Broward County Health Department programs and services will be closed for the Thanksgiving Holiday – Thursday and Friday (November 26 and 27, 2009).

“We sincerely encourage all people in the priority groups to get vaccinated now before the peak of flu season,” said Dr. Paula Thaqi, Director of the Broward County Health Department.

  1. Memory loss that disrupts daily life. One of the most common signs of Alzheimer's is memory loss, especially forgetting recently learned information. Others include forgetting important dates or events; asking for the same information over and over; relying on memory aides (e.g., reminder notes or electronic devices) or family members for things they used to handle on their own. 
    1. What's typical? Sometimes forgetting names or appointments, but remembering them later.
  2. Challenges in planning or solving problems.  Some people may experience changes in their ability to develop and follow a plan or work with numbers. They may have trouble following a familiar recipe or keeping track of monthly bills. They may have difficulty concentrating and take much longer to do things than they did before. 
    1. What's typical? Making occasional errors when balancing a checkbook.
