HOUSING HISTORY – The Second Great Land Rush

Coral Springs

May 1965 - House & Home magazine ran an article in their May 1965 edition about a Florida land rush where a developer sold 1,140 lots in eight minutes. The 120’ x 150’ lots were priced between $5,000 and $6,333 and surrounded a proposed golf course. The developer was Coral Ridge Properties (a division of Westinghouse) and the lots were in a planned new town to be called Coral Springs.

The location was remote by anybody’s standards and access was a narrow canal-sided strip of black top called Wiles Road. The project (Coral Springs) encompassed 10,000 acres and initial population was expected to reach 60,000.

Today, Coral Springs ranks as one of South Florida’s most desired addresses and is often cited as a successful attempt at planning new towns. Today, the city’s population is well in excess of 100,000 and Coral Springs offers a wide variety of housing types for a wide variety of budgets. Westinghouse and Coral Ridge Properties envisioned just such a town, and continued to guide the city’s growth for the next several decades. The overall success of this venture is a testament to a good product and good marketing.

5 Thanksgiving Traditions to Start This Year
While most people associate holiday traditions with Christmas, Thanksgiving is a wonderful time to create family traditions as well. Each special aspect of the holiday can take on new meaning every year as the family participates in activities that promote joy and gratitude.

1. Thanksgiving Eve Meal
Most families have special foods that they serve on Thanksgiving. But what about having a special meal each year on Thanksgiving Eve? Since most of the time people are busy with final preparations for the holiday, make it something easy. Carryout? Chinese? Pizza? Or maybe do a buffet where each member of the family requests a favorite easy finger food and this becomes the meal.

2. Yearly Thanksgiving Scrapbook
Each year, prepare a page in a scrapbook for each member of the family. Include a few pictures from the previous twelve months and leave room for each person to add their own Thanksgiving thoughts.

3. Skip Shopping and Have a Family Friday
Instead of joining the millions of other people out frantically searching for a bargain the day after Thanksgiving, stay home and make it a yearly Family Friday. Turn off the phone, the computer, and the TV. Wear comfy clothes, play games, watch a movie together, and just generally enjoy being a family. Rather than rush off from Thanksgiving, extend the holiday and spend it truly enjoying one of the things for which you are most thankful – your family. Establish a tradition of making Mexican, pizza or something else completely different from the Thanksgiving meal. (The holiday leftovers will keep until Saturday!)

4. Children's Thanksgiving Craft Corner
Set up a table or workspace where your children can do special Thanksgiving related crafts for the week or so before Thanksgiving. Make the goal to create special items that can be shared with the elderly, shut-ins, or someone who is far away from family during the holiday. Deliver the craft and a small food gift on the day before Thanksgiving.

5. Cozy Book Nook
Put all of your Thanksgiving books in a basket and place it in a cozy corner along with some comfy blankets. Spend some time each day enjoying cuddling and reading as a family.

That music you hear on the second Saturday of each month comes from the City of Parkland Amphitheater during the monthly concert series. The City’s Parks and Recreation Department is also located within the Amphitheater building.  Finally, the Parkland Family YMCA Family Center opened in January and has been providing programs and services for all Parkland residents.

Pine Trails Park hosts an assortment of events including the City of Parkland Fishing Derby and other community events.  Pine Trails Park truly shows the City of Parkland’s commitment to providing 1st class leisure and cultural amenities.

The Community Center totals 24,746 square feet.  In October 2007 the City Commission voted to contract out the operation of the Community Center to the YMCA of Broward County who quickly named it the Parkland YMCA Family Center.  The facility contains a full size gymnasium with volleyball, 6 basketball goals and a stage, a beautiful aerobics studio, a wellness center with state-of-the-art fitness equipment, a child watch area to drop your children off while you work out and multipurpose rooms for programs and for rental.  Young at Art Children’s Museum also provides art programming for participants of all ages within the facility.  The YMCA offers competitive program and membership rates and exceptional programs for all age groups.  You can contact them directly at 954-384-9622 for more information.
